'Shrek 5' just confirmed who is returning from the OG cast and when it'll reach our swamps

Plus, another character is getting their own spin-off

We finally have a date for when the big green ogre of our childhoods is officially making a comeback with ‘Shrek 5’ AND which character just confirmed they’re getting a spin-off movie?!

It's been 14 years since we last saw Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and all their mates on our screens, but the wait is almost over.

DreamWorks Animation just dropped the news on their official Shrek socials, writing: “Not too Far, Far Away…” wrote a spokesperson for the studio on X. “@Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

The OG cast are actually making a comeback??! Okay, who’s cutting onions ‘cause I’m tearing up.

Eddie Murphy spilled the deets in a Collider interview last month, saying they crew had already started working on it. “We started doing Shrek four or five months ago,” he said. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year. We’ll finish it up.”

In that same interview, Murphy let slip that his character Donkey is getting his own spin-off movie.

“Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well,” he said.

While he confirmed the film is on its way he also clarified that no work has begun on the project…yet!

You bet I’ll be asking “are we there yet?” every day until July 1st, 2026, ‘cause right now it feels like it’s far, far away!
