Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix cause musical mayhem in Gotham in 'Joker: Folie à Deux' trailer

Not what we were expecting AT ALL!

We've officially got another good look at Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, but it’s not exactly what fans had in mind.

The trailer for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ dropped today and it’s pure madness! Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck finds himself up in the “trial of the century” for his crimes as ‘The Joker’.

“Two years ago, the name Arthur Fleck hit Gotham like a hurricane," a voiceover says. “They believe he's some kind of martyr. He's not. He's a monster.”

Because of the trial, Arthur ends up dealing with newfound fame and fandom that includes none other than Harley Quinn.

Becoming some sort of superfan turned lover, Harley admits Arthur doesn’t make her feel “so alone".

“You can do anything you want. You’re Joker,” she tells him.

The pair go on to create chaos around the city of Gotham, with ... singing and dancing??

Arthur and Harley are seen dancing on courtroom steps and starring in a game show titled ‘Joker & Harley’, before singing a haunting a cappella version of Stevie Wonder's ‘For Once in My Life.’

If you’ve seen the first movie, this trailer might not be what you expected – but according to the cast, that’s the point.

Returning as Sophie Dumon from the 2019 ‘Joker’ film, Zazie Beetz told Variety: “I think people will be surprised. I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical.”

“We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it’s going to work really well.”

Variety reports that the movie will have 15 musical numbers, most of which will be covers. Director Todd Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter the ‘musical’ label was not something they decided on, but it’s just the continuation of an aspect that’s present in the original movie.

“We never talked about it like that,” he said. “I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element.”

“To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.”

What do we reckon? Are we keen on the musical version? I guess we’ll find out when it hits cinemas in October.
