I've been doing my own 'Brat' winter in NZ and it's been shockingly good for my mental health

Saying yes and setting boundaries is SO brat.

Charli XCX’s brand new album ‘BRAT’ dropped in June and it’s proving to be the gift that keeps on giving. Her latest collab with Billie Eilish, a remix of the song ‘Guess’, already has us chronically online girlies in a complete chokehold and has reinforced why I need to embrace my inner BRAT this winter.

But what does being a BRAT mean? According to Cambridge Dictionary, a brat is ‘a child who behaves badly’ which - even though I know I can be a diva at times - is not the vibe I’m talking about.

Charli has given the term a whole new meaning, describing BRAT as someone who is "a little messy, likes to party, maybe says some dumb things sometimes. They’re very honest, blunt, and volatile". Wow, it’s almost like looking in a mirror…

A brat is someone who feels themselves, but will also have a breakdown and party through it.

Even though I’m not having a BRAT summer rn, I decided these mantras could fill my life with more spice as I battle the winter blues.

So how am I becoming a BRAT in my day-to-day life?

Saying yes to everything

While it’s easy to want to rot in bed this winter, being anti-social is not very BRAT. Pulling yourself out of bed and saying yes to that spontaneous invite is a MUST. I may end up bumping that until 4am - but think of the story arc!

Surrounding myself with friends

It’s easy to get into the work slog and then be too tired to make an effort to even reply to any messages. Self-isolation is a one-way ticket to depresso city. Messaging my high school bestie Tiffany who’s in town for a drink then going to that event as a plus-one where you don’t know anyone. Being around friends opens up a world of possibilities - do it for the plot.

Setting boundaries

Sick of picking up shifts for $0? Being belittled by your co-worker Steve? Ladies, it’s time to stand up. Putting your foot down in situations where you aren’t getting anything in return is essential to your BRAT winter. It’s okay to ask for respect, credit, and consideration.

Wearing whatever the f*ck I want

Being afraid of judgement is so 2023. Grabbing those cowboy boots I purchased from the Op Shop and ignoring the strange looks I get from my co-workers is vital to character development.

Having a cry

Crying often carries negative connotations - but why? Allowing myself to cry when I need to has been f*cking liberating. If the urge comes, embrace it. Being emotional is very BRAT and communicating those feelings will allow a carefree mindset to flourish.

And in the magical words Charli XCX, ‘I went my own way and I made it.’
